Biography – About Dowshan Humzah

Dowshan Humzah is underestimated and different by design. He lives by two simple beliefs: ‘Succeed, serve and share’ – or, put another way, ‘Do good, do well’ – and ‘Be curious, travel and keep learning.’

For over 30 years, Dowshan has stood beside people and communities who are often overlooked – or, as he says, ‘underestimated’ – while also following his passions in travel, sport, writing and enacting change.

He was born in London and grew up in a flat on an old council estate in Peckham. He was eligible for free school meals and knows what it is like when people do not expect much of you. That journey shaped a simple belief: talent is everywhere, but access to opportunity is not. That is why he is passionate about opening doors for others and helping them be seen and heard.

What He Does Now

Today, Dowshan is an independent board director, strategic advisor, speaker and creative consultant. He helps organisations think differently, grow with purpose and turn uncertainty into opportunity – combining commercial rigour, behavioural science, digital and AI experience, creative thinking and lived perspective.

He brings leadership success from his time as a senior executive with global companies including RSA Insurance, Virgin Media, Orange and Procter & Gamble’s Hugo Boss – along with hands-on experience across four digital and technology start-ups (online retail for new cars, broadcast TV for an urban youth channel, a visual effects studio in Mumbai and social media management and training).

His current Board roles include Gresham College, where he is a Council Member and Board Director, and Slough Children First, where he is an Independent Board Director. At Slough Children First, he leads for Board members on workforce and transformation during an important period of improvement, reform and organisational change under Government intervention.

Previous Board and Chair roles include Overcoming MS, Board Apprentice Global, The MS Society, Intermezzo Studios and TWKS, alongside wider advisory roles including The Amos Bursary, 50:50 Parliament and Ramadan Tent Project.

Across his Board work, his focus is ultimately simple: stronger governance, better questions, clearer accountability and better outcomes for the people an organisation exists to serve.

His advisory and consulting work focuses on transformative growth, digital and AI transformation, innovation, customer and workforce experience, governance and decision-making under uncertainty.

Breaking New Ground

Dowshan has led and delivered industry innovations, significant commercial growth and national firsts:

  • At RSA, he launched the UK’s first telematics or ‘black box’ motor insurance and flexible online life insurance – using technology, data and customer insight to widen access, create new revenue and protect profitability.
  • At Virgin Media, he helped scale broadband revenues 20x to more than £300 million in three years, led the Next Generation Network Strategy including early UK trials of HDTV and ADSL2+, and steered a £35 million broadband investment case through Board approval.
  • At Orange, he opened international roaming and direct dialling to the whole customer base rather than a privileged few – a UK industry first – exceeding revenue targets by more than 70%.
  • At P&G, he devised and implemented the UK world-exclusive launch of HUGO by Hugo Boss, challenging conventional category thinking with a cinema-first and cultural influencer strategy built around ‘Don’t imitate, innovate.’ The launch exceeded stretch sales targets by 40%, helped return the UK fine-fragrance portfolio to profit and created a franchise still thriving more than 30 years later – despite the Financial Times describing new fragrances as having ‘three-year shelf lives’. He also laid the groundwork for the women’s fashion line.
  • At TWKS, he blended social media and digital thinking with the GCSE curriculum to support English and Maths attainment, aspiration, social mobility and employability.
  • With UK Government and the 30% Club, he co-created the UK’s only practical programme to improve Board composition and quality – subsequently recognised across major reviews of Board-level gender, ethnic and disability inclusion.

His next book, Underestimated, will explore many of these themes further.

Creative Consulting, Cognitive Catalyst™ and Inclusive Thinking

Dowshan calls his approach to problem-solving Creative Consulting – where commercial analysis and logic are combined with behavioural science, imagination, creativity and oblique thinking to expand the solution space and achieve transformative rather than merely incremental results.

He has formalised this thinking through Cognitive Catalyst™, the umbrella for his advisory work, workshops and programmes. It is designed to help organisations escape what he calls ‘persistent misdirected efforts’ and challenge assumptions, widen possibility and make better decisions.

Dowshan also developed the POETS model – Perspective, Outlook, Experience, Thought, Sector and Social background – to demonstrate why cognitive diversity and lived experience lead to better judgement. The principle is straightforward: better decisions require better perspectives.

His approach to technology is equally human-centred: technology should be our servant, not our master. Digital transformation and AI should improve the experience of customers, citizens and employees rather than simply digitising existing problems.

Experience and Recognition

Dowshan holds a BSc (Hons) Economics: Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics (LSE) and completed Executive Education in Strategy at London Business School (LBS).

He is a Chartered Marketer and Fellow of the Institute of Directors, Chartered Institute of Marketing and Royal Society of Arts. In 2024, he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London.

He speaks and runs workshops on decision-making, behavioural science, innovation, digital and AI transformation, governance and creative leadership. His audiences have included the Institute of Directors, City of London, City of London Police, universities and major professional and industry organisations. His current signature sessions include Improving Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, The Art of Behavioural Science, Don’t Imitate, Innovate – Lessons from HUGO by Hugo Boss, Creative Consulting for Transformative Results, Digital and AI Transformation with a Human Touch, and Diversity That Delivers – The POETS Model.

In July 2026, his thinking on technology and digital sovereignty was referenced in Hansard, where Baroness Uddin described him as “a futurologist, technology practitioner and author” and cited his view that technology should be our servant, not our master.

In September 2026, he co-authored an article in The Independent arguing that the NHS does not need more governance, but better governance – focused on whether oversight actually improves care for patients.

He is co-author of Uncertainty Deconstructed, published by Springer – a book challenging conventional thinking about uncertainty and showing how foresight, imagination and vision can turn ambiguity into action and opportunity.

Alongside this, his Four Eyes of Good Governance model asks Boards to balance Oversight, Insight, Foresight and Hindsight – looking beyond compliance to whether governance genuinely improves decisions and outcomes.

Beyond the Boardroom

Dowshan is passionate about travel, sport, music and photography. He has visited more than 100 countries and is a member of the Travelers’ Century Club, photographing landscapes, people and major events along the way.

He is a qualified fitness instructor, specialising in Boxercise and Kettlebells. However, long-term orthopaedic injuries following a full Achilles rupture have held him back.

For relaxation – and occasionally tension – he has been a Chelsea FC season-ticket holder for over 30 years and was a pre-Abramovich shareholder. He also has an extensive memorabilia collection celebrating favourite artists, musicians and sporting heroes.

But most of all, he is proud to be the dad of a bold, brave and beautiful daughter – who inspires him every day to help build a fairer, kinder and better world.
